The graphics are cute and the puzzles are great.
In order to keep your pirate permanently, you need to spend real money on it (otherwise, it is deleted along with its assets and reputation after six weeks of inactivity) -- over the last decade or two, I have lost many a pirate from this mechanic, and a couple were ones that I had developed enough that I had a crew of online friends who were deleted along with the character.
This structure creates a constant sense of involvement, as there is rarely a moment where the player is not actively contributing through gameplay rather than passive progression.
