fun game with a cool asymmetrical gameplay. would recommend playing with friends, and the expansion is worth the price as it adds much more depth to the game
As for its presentation, Root does a wonderful job of adapting that of the board game, with a charming cartoonish art style that uses the original assets wherever possible while making sensible adjustments to the layout of tableaus, cards etc.
While there are some mechanics that probably play better as a board game or a multiplayer with voice chat, I mostly play solo.
- More customization in regards to game set-up / home-rules, so that popular tournament rules can be used. (please 3 plot sets for Corvids & Despot Infamy!!)
There’s also some decent sound design on display, featuring punchy sound effects and a fitting soundtrack, my only wish for which would be to include more tracks.
- Root has so many little rules that it's very easy to forget one in the analogue version and the digital interface keeps you on the straight-and-narrow
Theme by theme
Every theme is scored by what reviewers actually said about it, not just whether they recommended the game.
No themes split opinion in this sample.
Ranked by how many sampled reviews mention each topic. A topic sits in a column by what reviewers said about that topic; the percentage beside it is how many of them recommended the game anyway. 2 more themes were each raised by fewer than 6 sampled reviews and are not shown.
