I don't mind the lack of checkpoints honestly, it gives another level of challenge to just stay flying and not crash into orange land.

Another positive, the soundtrack holds up pretty well and the take on boss fights are (sometimes) cool, especially when the game turns into a bullet hell and you're thrown into a cage of railguns, lasers and a bazillion bombs and missiles.
