I actually like the music and sound effects.
If a clean user interface and easy setup is what you’re after, I recommend you try NetHack 4, which doesn’t really change gameplay from vanilla NetHack (monster AI is a little different, and I’ve noticed minor changes like candles are more common in the gnomish mines), but adds an improved user interface, many quality of life features, and lots of flexibility via the options; without requiring much setup.
