What players think
The recurring themes across 300 analysed reviews: what players praise, what divides them, and what to know.
The exploration was wonderful, and I loved the pixel graphics.
Onto the gameplay: I love Metroidvanias, and Animal Well hits the mark.
Although there are some intense moments, the puzzle focus and the simple yet soothing soundtrack create a surprisingly calming atmosphere.
Unlike some recent combat-focused Metroidvanias like Metroid Dread, which benefit from multiple difficulty modes, Animal Well is more limited in replayability unless you’re interested in speedrunning or no-hit challenges (which it would be excellent for).
The game is a technical marvel running buttery smooth on Windows 11 and Steam Deck.
Like from hitting the "play" button here on steam, to actually navigating the game's main menu takes like under 5 seconds, which is insane.
Theme by theme
Every theme is scored by what reviewers actually said about it, not just whether they recommended the game.
No recurring complaints surfaced in this sample.
Ranked by how many sampled reviews mention each topic. A topic sits in a column by what reviewers said about that topic; the percentage beside it is how many of them recommended the game anyway. One more theme was raised by fewer than 6 sampled reviews and is not shown.
