The recurring themes across 300 analysed reviews: what players praise, what divides them, and what to know.
The game is one of Sid Meyer's best from back in the day, and it balances well the ability to play as a sandbox builder vs a super-competitve crazy land.
The game is best balanced at "Tycoon" (2nd hardest) difficulty level: and even then it is pretty much over after 70 years. - If you want to see the later trains, choose the later starting date.
The game has a charming art style more akin to an HO or N scale model train layout than the ostensible real world look of the previous Railroad Tycoon games.
Super-easy interface and a really fun three-level game: railroad construction and operation; financing your railroad; and fights for corporate control of your competitors (or them fighting to take over you!).
For this reason, I was delighted to find out that under Linux the Steam version combined with the Steam provided Wine/Proton works out of the box.
