Playing the first game is highly recommended in order to understand the story.
The gameplay itself is quite fun - you're put into a vampire's body and do various quests (won't spoil) from different NPCs such as the leaders of different faction/clans.
Graphics and sound effects give you this dark, eerie feeling, so while it might not look ultra beautiful, it is most certainly pleasing enough.
