Being newer, AH3LMSSX is an update to AH3LM with a few more additional characters available for purchase through DLC (save for one), new stages (meh), and balance updates.
In terms of the gameplay, AH3LMSSX is a solid game for both casual and competitive players.
Side note: I spend most of my time playing single player options so I cant speak for the matchmaking or multiplayer aspect.
Super Smash Brothers Melee is an older game, one which is divisive in appeal.
