Masterpiece Edition proved to me that this was exactly the right decision: not only did it play perfectly right out of the box (the ScummVM virtual machine plays well even when using Proton on Linux!) but it preserved the graininess of the FMV and the chunkiness of all its pixels without sacrificing playability.
