The most-requested features like multiplayer and the addition of hostile mobs and new creatures would add a much-needed layer of survival and challenge for those who desire it, greatly extending the long-term appeal.

That isn't really the dev's fault(s) though, as the most recent patch at the time of writing is somewhat optimization focused.
Overall it is gorgeous and with some better optimization it would go a lot smoother.
