Chrono Trigger genuinely lives up to its legendary reputation — the time travel mechanics feel purposeful rather than gimmicky, each era has its own distinct personality, and the soundtrack is the kind you hum for days after putting the game down.
But in 2026 this feels great: the plot is great, the graphics are nice (just retro, of course), and the whole gameplay is very addictive.
However, the barrier to entry is low; once you toggle the graphics settings, the original brilliance outshines the port’s sterile wrapper.
The port is a bit rough very rarely, I will sometimes find myself fighting the game to save at a save point: sometimes the save menu refuses to open and it's taken a couple attempts just to do that.
