I understand that this kind of story could not have really been told in any other form of media the way the designer wanted to portray it and while it was a success at making the vision come to life I don't think it was intended for the game to be interesting.

The slight ding is literally just the gameplay mechanics that are clever but monotone and because of the achievement/story bits that aren't actually in game.
