I also think that a modern re-release of a classic game like this would greatly benefit from (local) multiplayer, map customization, random maps or options like sound volume, different resolutions or running the game in window-mode.
Apart from the gameplay, the game looks and sounds very basic at best.
The graphics have a slight blurry quality to them and don't look so good at today's higher resolutions - but, it does date all the way back to around 1996 if I recall correctly, so it can be forgiven for that.
