There's really not any clean way to implement a retro stage concept without it just being a coat of paint over the existing gameplay, so I can respect that attempt.
Just as Runner2, it's not imprisoned behind the bars of 8bit graphics, so Gaij... sorry, Choice Provisions went wild and created one of the most stunning, beautiful platformers worlds of the last few years.
In all fairness, if you haven't played Runner's games before, you will find most of my remarks invalid since the colorful platformer still offers as a loads of fun, new hero quests (reasons to replay even more), unlockable characters, cutscenes, shop cosmetics, bonus retro platformer (basically a game inside of a game) and, of course, Charles Martinet.
It also has a great deal of customization, and difficulty options, as well as a great soundtrack.
The jump height is often difficult to judge, however (due to the 3D and shifting perspective) and there is also lack of feedback for when you hit the ground - I died often because I "air jumped" rather than "jumped" because I jumped just before the character hit the ground; this could be solved with a sound or a controller rumble, but it was more of a problem at the beginning.
It's more dynamic, better graphics, MUCH smoother animation now that it's not fps capped (it's running great on a 144hz g-sync monitor), smoother/slicker UI, music is still great, controls feel better.
