What players think
The recurring themes across 227 analysed reviews: what players praise, what divides them, and what to know.
I sub-divide surrealism in gaming into “surrealism for the sake of surrealism” and “surrealism that despite eyebrow-raising WTF moments still manages to tell a story”, the kind of story that you might even understand.
This mastery of the mise-en-scene was not in vain as his films gained critical acclaim because his viewers would rewatch with sadistic scrutiny - the audience would rejoice in extracting all the information from every prop to lighting design like a sponge.
When it comes to strange, whimsical games like “Stanley Parable” or “Bucket Detective” there is very little point to explain the overall story, or even gameplay for that matter, as it is an “experience” rather than traditional game.
The game is played mostly in silence with an occasional well-placed track, but the sound effects are superb and bring in a slight layer or normalcy to the otherwise absurd world of the game.

No recurring complaints surfaced in this sample.
Ranked by how many sampled reviews mention each topic. A topic sits in a column by what reviewers said about that topic; the percentage beside it is how many of them recommended the game anyway.
