Yes I appreciate that this contributes to the atmosphere of organic discovery and makes you take in the world and visuals and not just charge past large chunks of visual storytelling: but the open map is pretty large for this kind of game, and if you think you've missed a story beat and want to backtrack, you'll be dreading the painful slog across the game world.
