Released in 2006, Warlords builds upon the core gameplay that made Civ IV a favorite among strategy enthusiasts, introducing new civilizations, leaders, units, and gameplay mechanics that significantly enhance both the tactical and diplomatic layers of the game.
As a leader of one of the eighteen civilizations of the base game (that can become even more with the two expansions, Warlords and Beyond the Sword) the player is expected to explore the surrounding lands (in a potentially procedurally generated map) and expand their city borders, found new cities or conquer others to gradually become an empire and eventually win a campaign that spans from the stone age to the near future of 2050.
Accompanying these potentially endless games are decent graphics that are clear to understand despite the complexity of the system and an incredibly (and award winning!)
Theme by theme
Every theme is scored by what reviewers actually said about it, not just whether they recommended the game.
Ranked by how many sampled reviews mention each topic. A topic sits in a column by what reviewers said about that topic; the percentage beside it is how many of them recommended the game anyway. One more theme was raised by fewer than 6 sampled reviews and is not shown.
