I actually like it quite a bit despite the overall lower quality (the planet accretion disk textures though...).
The game is open to mods but not as much as I initially thought, and for the most part mod support includes changes to the HUD and graphics, rather than any changes to gameplay (though addition of new missions is possible, it seems).
My only qualms are a lack of full controller support for those of us lacking a flight stick and a strong wish that help could be accessed in-game. (to date it's only a file in the game directory, along with the keyboard map which you'll find quite necessary).
