They make it work fantastically by making the Navi-like companion helper character the focal point of the story, and a deeply interesting character.
Gameplay is bare bones, but the story is really moving, and interacts with the gameplay in some fun ways.
I'd also like to make special mention of the soundtrack, mixed in amongst the original soundtrack are a few classical music tracks.
