Atonement: Scourge of Time

Atonement: Scourge of Time is a traditional turn-based fantasy RPG that works within a modest independent-game framework while reaching for a surprisingly grim and substantial narrative.

It's clearly a low-budged title, as is evident from the subpar graphics and the short story (took me about 11 hours for a full playthrough), but it does deliver on both the gameplay and the story.

Its RPG Maker roots are readily apparent, but the game makes a genuine effort to establish an identity through its setting and combat ideas rather than simply repeating the conventions of similar retro-inspired adventures.

Boss encounters are generally where these systems become most meaningful, particularly when playing on the more demanding difficulty setting.

It's still the base RPG engine underneath there but the soundtrack is awesome and the intro to the game is some of the best i have seen in awhile in these types of games and pacing is good.
