I have played a gross amount of sandboxes and Portal Knights manages to uniquely distinguish itself in terms of mechanics, fluidity, content, and polish.
Much more so with friends, but it's a good timesink; you can always find a thing to work toward or accomplish, the combat is fairly simple but arcade-y, and the little patterns/layouts of the places you explore are sort of fun.
This game was really great, me and my co-op partner quickly got addicted and did 10 hours the first day.
This is a clever way to help with optimisation (especially on slower computers) and allows a fun linear narrative as you follow the path to increasingly interesting and fun portal worlds.
Curves aren't much of a reality in a box-block game, but none of the graphics are pixelated or jagged.
The character customization is also good too, allowing you even to change the voice of the character.
