There's the obvious... roll dice, use dice, kill monster, move on, but hidden in there is a depth that found me hunting crits, applying layered reasoning to the dice I choose to upgrade (or sabotage) and once some of the more permanent upgrades started unlocking, we found some interesting new ways to approach the combat.
