The graphics, audio, and quality of life features are all well worth the price—that said, NetHack is of course free to play standalone or with other open source programs; however, if you aren't used to roguelikes or MUDs or other games played in a terminal, I would actually recommend buying Vulture before trying to compile NetHack yourself—reason being, the graphical interface and point-and-click controls vastly improve NetHack's learning curve, making shortcut memorization a matter of convenience rather than one of necessity.
