The TD genre has been in a bit of a decline for a really long time, and games like this one are a breath of fresh air - solid core gameplay, a creative approach to setting/visuals, focuses on shorter levels and makes good use of the rogue-like formula to make a game with smaller scope work well for longer time without getting repetitive.
