While the gunplay reflects the technology of its era, the seamless transition between piloting a spacecraft and exploring locations on foot remains one of the game's most distinctive features, helping it feel much larger than a traditional space simulator.
Decent graphics for its time (and for most indie-level games today), wide open play, great sandbox feel (after you play awhile, it opens up).
