What players think
The recurring themes across 300 analysed reviews: what players praise, what divides them, and what to know.
is a truly unique action adventure game with a creative world, fun characters, and game design that's taking inspiration from a lot of genres (RPGs, point-and-click adventure games, platformers, Zelda / Metroid style progression via finding new tools in an open world, and more), but manages to make it all cohere into an experience that's a joy to play.
BUT - The emulation itself felt suitable, and the 10-15 hrs of gameplay to 100% this game feel incredibly fun and rewarding, the controls feel tight and the soundtrack is still incredibly gorgeous.
The visuals are a nice blend of 3D environments mixed with 2D spritework and it is honestly pretty amazing and ambitious for a game developer's first outing in the 90s.
Playability & Replayability
When I was old enough to hold a controller I remember sitting on the floor in front of the TV and having my mom watch me try and complete the sequel, Tomba 2, albeit it took me several months to accomplish that feat.
The steam deck gets solid 60.
Theme by theme
Every theme is scored by what reviewers actually said about it, not just whether they recommended the game.
Ranked by how many sampled reviews mention each topic. A topic sits in a column by what reviewers said about that topic; the percentage beside it is how many of them recommended the game anyway.
