You should read a Steam guide to get more detailed info on the energy/build/ammo mechanics; this knowledge is highly useful and there's a lot of bang for the buck in micromanaging this - not in a repetitive RSI way, it's all about carefully deciding what order to do things in and where.

The difficulty curve is really nice; each map presents some new more difficult hurdle, but once you've understood and dealt with that you can bring to bear all your accumulated knowledge from the previous maps to crush the enemy in a very satisfying conclusion.
