What also felt unique were the visuals, with beautiful surreal 2.5D landscapes that spoke to the imagination.
Also it's suprisingly big and filled with things to find, from health and mana upgrades, to currency, charms and optional collectibles that grant you the true ending.
While a fair chunk of the abilities weren't true metroidvania upgrades, I did get a number of those as well and overall I enjoyed that progression.
Most of the game occurs in the setting of a huge cave, and it manages to give some “lo-fi” aesthetics with both the music and the lighting effects.
