As someone who had yet to play a single Dragon Quest, I was fully expecting to just play through it for fun, and to educate myself on an important part of JRPG history, then move on.
Visuals were really good and I'd always praise Akira Toriyama's art style for the characters.
In all honesty it took me a good 25-30 hours to really get into the game, but once I finally felt comfortable with the mechanics and gameplay it "clicked" and I ended up loving the 2nd half of the game.
Music: Classical-style music with lots of horns, and iconic DQ songs remastered complete with real instruments and a more robust soundtrack.

Theme by theme
Every theme is scored by what reviewers actually said about it, not just whether they recommended the game.
Ranked by how many sampled reviews mention each topic. A topic sits in a column by what reviewers said about that topic; the percentage beside it is how many of them recommended the game anyway. 3 more themes were each raised by fewer than 6 sampled reviews and are not shown.
