AI difficulty can be tweaked, numbers can be adjusted, and the sheer number of races split over 3 different ages (each has an iteration in one of 3 time periods, evolving to meet the slow loss of magical presence in the world), make for a game that has endless replayability and is quite accessible.

For me it was interesting enough to play on medium difficulty, of course AI can not be compared with human, but he actively resists, collects armies and punishes player for mistakes.
