Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition

The story goes in many different interesting directions but comes together in the end.

Gameplay: (from bg1 review: Never would have believed dnd mechanics could be translated into real time gameplay like this and work. But the game proved me wrong. Feels way better than actual D&D combat too. Strategizing each fight felt very engaging.) Definitely a step up from Baldurs gate 1.

and the sheer amount of role playing options and the rich and deep lore( and in my opinion the best rpg story) with a combat system that feel so good to experiment with "although it becomes annoying sometimes when the enemy is suddenly immune to everything" makes this the greatest rpg game of all time and i believe everyone should at lest experience this master piece once

DLC: The Black pits 2: Gladiators of Thay is awesome for testing out different character builds and has a nice arena quest continuing off of The Black Pits DLC in Baldur's gate 1’s enhanced edition.

Baldur's Gate 2 also includes much more voice acting, which personally helps convey the mood and feelings of the character you are speaking to, and it makes the romantic conversations that you have with the character you are romancing much more meaningful.
