Chroma Squad

It's not overly complex, but the huge variety of monsters (there's got to be at least 20-30) all have unique abilities that manage to keep the gameplay fresh.

The game only gets more fun as you progress it and by the final chapter you really feel your characters power level increase.

The combat balance itself is great as well and Challenging difficulty felt perfect to me on my second playthrough - an engaging early game (somewhat rare in Tactical RPGs imo), a challenging midgame difficulty spike, and then a power-fantasy fulfilling end-game where your characters spike in strength tremendously.

And it helps that not only does the game have a difficulty select but you can save anytime you're not mid-mission should mitigate those concerned.

The visuals also lend themselves perfectly to the tone and a lot of the boss designs are incredibly visually intriguing and laughably on the nose for being villains-of-the-week concept (the "purple dinosaur" shown in the game's preview screenshots in particular almost felt TOO goofy even by this game's standards until I saw the attack animation, at which point I was back onboard).

Has a pretty solid soundtrack, decent character customization and the in game humour / references are charming.
