The areas are open, but progression is linear, which I personally prefer and the game most certainly respects your time. 100% is easily achievable in under 15 hours even if you are spending ample time lamenting the high failure chance of fusing a dragon tail with a butterfly tail .
You can unlock up to four build slots to quick swap to, but for 99% of the game you only need two, one optimized for fast efficient flight and one optimized for fighting, and the remaining 1% is for quests that require you to use specific parts/sets.
