There are a lot of interlocking combat systems, each fairly simple on its own but adding up to create a wide array of things to think about as you try to manage your forces, and the AI plays fairly well - it's smart about using units and avoids being baited and kited, but it does often act fairly passive, which allows you time to get your limited forces into position and plan properly.
