While I did swap to Halberds once I had a decent enough Blood Code, I enjoyed using the Rune Blades because you were able to do 'unarmed-lite' combat when using any ichor skill that detached them from you.

I think it's a great option/pseudo difficulty slider, giving you the choice between having another body on the field for damage or support, or just granting you some extra stat buffs for solo combat.
