The writing in this game is phenomenal, and while you certainly can play the game on an easier difficulty to experience it, I think the difficulty adds weight to the story and helps you empathize with the main characters all the more as you move through it.
But as I did, and I began looking past a few of the graphical and gameplay shortcomings, I really, really began to enjoy this game.
The lighting is also surprisingly ambient.

The audio design plays a more significant role, using subtle ambient sounds and restrained music to create a quiet, uneasy environment that enhances the feeling of being alone in a vast, silent space.
