What players think
The recurring themes across 300 analysed reviews: what players praise, what divides them, and what to know.
I think it’s absolutely worth playing through the first episode, if only to appreciate where the FPS genre began.
The image quality is improved with high resolution textures, and the game runs smoother than ever before.
The colourful sprites still look pretty good, the sound effects are quaint but add so much atmosphere, the music by Bobby Prince is iconic.
I then quickly discovered ECWolf, which adds many of the quality of life features you'd expect in a modern port: high resolutions, better controls (when customized), controller support, automap, quick save/load, etc.
Theme by theme
Every theme is scored by what reviewers actually said about it, not just whether they recommended the game.
Ranked by how many sampled reviews mention each topic. A topic sits in a column by what reviewers said about that topic; the percentage beside it is how many of them recommended the game anyway. 2 more themes were each raised by fewer than 6 sampled reviews and are not shown.
