If you run out of ammo you can even throw your pistol at your attacker to stun them which might buy you the time you need to swap weapons (melee weapons are also throwable).

The first chapter is pretty decent in terms of balance of difficulty and fun, including a surprise reset to scratch section where you get separated from your equipment and have to work your way back to it.
