New characters step into the archetypal roles of for instance your mentor, the prosecutor, and your legal assistant, and while they have plenty of similarities to the old ones (sometimes down to certain animations or poses), they each have their unique qualities that make them feel new and, well, unique.
Gameplay is kind of a combination of a visual novel and a point and click adventure game.
Aside from the improved graphics and animations, there's also a number of quality-of-life upgrades.
I also consider that AJ is the best looking AA game, with beautiful spritework and a stellar soundtrack.
I should note that unlike the original Phoenix Wright trilogy, _this_ trilogy seems entirely optimized for playing with a controller, to the point where playing with a mouse has some annoying interface quirks.
