I figure the 'mixed' rating from recent reviews are from people buying the game on discount due to the charming graphics, getting bludgeoned over the head by the game's difficulty, and not understanding that failure in Shiren is necessary sometimes.
Visually, the game embraces a colorful and charming presentation that contrasts with its often unforgiving difficulty.
While it still has a lot of elements from archaic game design like hidden traps and heavy RNG, the smoothness of the interface, control scheme, and general polish already puts this close to the top of the list in terms of accessibility.
Combined with an excellent soundtrack and polished interface, the presentation successfully supports the addictive gameplay loop.
