The way I picked up most game mechanics as I went through my first run is really a testament to someone on the development team having some kind of skill as an educator or some other such magic.

maybe too late to add, but I really think a classic RPG interface with visual slots for weapons and so on would add so much to the game and let people instantly connect to it. (look at 'Caves of Qud' which just released last year and has an insanely well done UI for this now, even for characters with 4 arms or nearby floatables)
