Perfect Tides, the precursor to this game, displays a competence in applying the basic mechanics of Adventure games in highly effective ways to tell an intimate story.
When you think about games structured around cinematic set pieces, what comes to mind are the bombastic action adventures of Naughty Dog, Remedy, or Kojima, full of climactic, complex sequences that break with the usual gameplay for cathartic release.
Perfect Tides choice of the classic adventure game genre and old-school pixel art graphics was not just a cheap aesthetic choice, but a perfect complement to the hyper-specific depiction of a generation coming of age right between the innocence of early internet culture and the grimness of post-9/11 society.
Having said that, the new game also incorporates many new features as well, such as a streamlined interface, a deeper system of conversing with characters and interacting with computers, and some new RPG-like elements, because if the first game was more along the lines of inventory-based puzzle game, STATION TO STATION has more of an RPG feel.
Station to Station is a perfect evolution from its predecessor, both from the Mara we knew and the Mara that is today, as well as just the animation, game design and music.
