Do not buy this game alone, its half the fun without being able to use their amazing wargaming engine to play out the battles from your campaign in a total war esque style.
The mechanics are intelligently designed, with historical background perfectly blended with fun and realistic gameplay.
This creates even more asymmetry in multiplayer, where some factions have substantial advantages that amount to "easy mode" (hello, Seljuqs) and others (like the tiny taifas in Spain) are tough to run.
Some of the graphics are really nice and dedicated to replicate historical sources.
Difficulty is pretty well balanced, at least in the beginning and middle stages of a playthrough, and the entire game is a sandbox to play out any type of campaign and build any kingdom you want to.
