I have played much more complex deck builders with meta progression, quest systems, multiple parties and characters, but they bored me precisely because of their "unnecessary" complexity.
It is wonderful that games have become more complex and deeper over the years, but it is also nice that there are "essential" titles that put gameplay first.
The graphics are high-quality, and I find the style retro and creative.
Sound effects: Satisfying and effective
