That being said, there is definitely an overarching sense of progression - you're constantly unlocking/finding newer and better weapons/gear, plus you'll get a steady drip-feed of "Embers", which function like Titanite from the Souls games, allowing you to upgrade your weapons/armor/runes to make their effects/damage stronger.

The demo is brutal but hopeful and interested in its characters.

The art style is cool, I'm always a sucker for pixel art, and the music is surprisingly good.

Some tracks and sound effects are excellent, but certain enemy noises become repetitive or annoying over time.

Some optimization issues like a bit of slowdown sometimes when there's a lot going on and audio desync occasionally but I wasn't very bothered because I was enjoying things so much.

A real bummer because this game plays like a dream on the Steam Deck.
