I have played through the story mode with all characters and other solo modes on the hardest difficulty (AI difficulty level 4) and have played online against others through quickplay (yeah, there's not many players, so I waited a long while.
Its hand-drawn visuals, tight mechanics, and emphasis on psychological dueling create a distinctive identity within the genre.
Considering how long this game has been in development, I assume this is on purpose to promote deliberate gameplay.
Since I initially reviewed the game, the devs have added several single player modes to supplement the local/remote play PVP foundation they started with.
While this is a nice addition, they play too frequently and cannot be turned down independently from other SFX.
