In design and game play, it takes as inspiration the Ultima series (particularity Ultima 5) and then adds 30 years of design innovation in both quality of life (intuitive controls, inventory management) and in creating interesting choices.
This game has the addictive core gameplay loop of any open world RPG down pat.
I actually find the simple tile graphics to be a plus for me, leaving room for the brain to actually engage in imagination.
For added difficulty you can play with a reduced party size and forgo allowing NPCs to join.
