Every faction starts off with a unique set of units (some are focused on melee, others on beam attacks or railgun shots, some with defenses that work against one or the other, and so on), but you can get more unit types both from research and conquering other factions, so you can mix and match your fleet loadouts with a very delightfully large range of combos of ships and mechs.
