The controller allows you to move forward and backwards a tad more easily, which is how I stumbled upon the technique (side note: now that I think about it, I found the secret and triggered the secret/true ending right after checking my achievements in Steam...pressing random buttons for a moment to get my bearings again :-P).

Also note that it runs great on the steam deck and I played the entirety of it on its small screen with headphones; I can only suspect that the experience would have been even better on the big screen.
