The progression is EXTREMELY slow, even using optimal farming methods.
The interesting part is that LOCATIONS COMBINE, meaning for example a farm might give you a quest (spawning in a stronger enemy somewhere) but a battlefield card placed next to it may turn it into a raided farm that does something else entirely.
